New WPSL Reno Tahoe Liberty FC Team joins the Women’s Premier Soccer League

For Immediate Release June 13, 2016.

The Liberty Sports Group, Inc. (LSG) is proud to announce the creation of the Reno Tahoe Liberty Football Club and their acceptance to the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL).

The Reno Tahoe Liberty FC will join the league and start the inaugural season in 2017 as an NCAA-compliant amateur team that features a mixture of top local Northern Nevada women and top collegiate players, as well as former pros.

The team will play its home games in Reno vs. teams in the west region, but future plans include playing league home games in Lake Tahoe.

The WPSL League features 100 plus teams from across the nation and is the oldest and most consistent venue for top level women’s soccer in America with amateur, collegiate, semi pro and professional players. It is regarded as the essential development league for players hoping to play in the newly formed United Women’s Soccer league (UWS) and eventually the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), which is the top professional women’s league in the country. The WPSL is based in Sacramento California and was formed in 1998. Teams in the league have the option of competing with all professional players or a mix of professionals and amateurs, or fully amateur/collegiate.

Jerry Zanelli Commissioners Welcome 2“I am pleased to have the Reno Tahoe Liberty FC become the newest member of the league. Northern Nevada soccer fans should get ready for a fabulous women’s soccer season commencing in 2017. Northern Nevada has become a known soccer area and the team surely will feature high caliber players for the fan’s enjoyment. The Liberty is a great addition to the WPSL League,” said WPSL Commissioner Jerry Zanelli.

The Liberty Sports Group is committed to developing homegrown talent and showcasing the area’s best soccer players. As a result, the Liberty will be built around local talent and will provide Northern Nevada and surrounding areas’ best collegiate players the opportunity to play in a professional atmosphere against top national, collegiate, and international stars during the summer months of May, June and July.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for local players to gain exposure and it gives them the chance to play at the highest level of women’s premier soccer, without forfeiting their NCAA eligibility,” said the LSG partners. “The players that will play on the new WPSL team will be some of the same players people watched during their youth years locally. The young  women going into college from the local youth clubs will also benefit from direct exposure to players already playing at the collegiate level around the country”

LSG’s philosophy of player progression led them to create the Reno Tahoe Liberty FC to provide a venue for local players that aspire to reach their goals of playing at a top level.

The LSG Reno Tahoe Liberty FC program is “club-neutral” and allows the club to work with players from the time they’re four years old through soccer clinics and camps, all the way through college soccer and beyond. The LSG will provide the best local female players the opportunity to play on a Women’s WPSL Premier League team, the Reno Tahoe Liberty FC, without having to leave their local club or college.

“We plan to help kids as early as three or four year-olds in the local rec programs as well as the local clubs so that they are part of a vertically-integrated player development program,” said LSG. “We will develop relationships with all clubs and their players and provide a venue to help them maximize their potential as soccer players for their young-adult years as well as provide them outlets to showcase their abilities and play the game at their highest ability as they move away from the youth ranks.”

The Liberty is scheduled to kick off its inaugural season in May 2017 and will be holding tryout sessions throughout the rest of 2016 starting in July in an effort to give Northern Nevada women an opportunity to tryout for the club. The team will hold a press conference to introduce the club to the community and future Liberty fanatics.
